An update to an earlier post, Rocky Mountain Rescue was finally able to locate a Back Country skier who had no idea that his birthday gift was not an avalanche beacon: According to the Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office, the owner had no idea that every time he turned on the ACR Electronics PLB-300 MicrOFix given to him as a birthday present, a distress signal was broadcast to international satellites linked to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Air Force Rescue Coordination Center.
He was located when he forgot to turn off his device and drove to Boulder for a Doctor's appointment.
